Methyl Methacrylate (MMA)
Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is an important chemical with the formula CH2=C(CH3)COOCH3. It is a colorless, volatile and flammable liquid with a fruity odor. MMA is easily polymerized in the presence of light, heat and initiators while under irradiation. MMA can be polymerized or copolymerized with other monomers (such as other methacrylates, acrylic esters, butadiene, and styrene), and unsaturated polyesters (such as rubber latex).
Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) is a transparent colorless plastic material. It is readily fabricated and can be tinted as required. It can be produced in forms of cast sheets, cast/extruded rods and tubes, and moulding powder. It is durable and has good insulation properties. Copolymers can be used in paints, lacquers, adhesives, textile and paper treatments, and leather coatings. Other applications include preparation of castings for biological specimen preservation, and denture production.
